School bus endorsement practice test

The S endorsement sits on top of the passenger endorsement and adds what makes school routes different: the danger zone around the bus, the light and stop-arm sequence, and student loading procedures that leave nothing to chance.

School Bus Endorsement Question 1 of 10

After unloading at a stop, before pulling away you should:

How the S endorsement works

You need the P (passenger) endorsement first, then the S adds a school-bus knowledge test and a skills test taken in a school bus. States layer their own requirements on top — background checks, physical performance tests, district training programs — so expect more paperwork than any other endorsement.

What the test covers

The questions come from Section 10 of the CDL manual:

  • The 10-foot danger zone and the crossover mirrors that let you see into it
  • The 8-light system: amber means preparing to stop, red plus stop arm means stopped for students
  • Loading and unloading: students approach on your signal, cross 10 feet in front, and never go back for dropped items
  • Counting students and checking mirrors before moving
  • Emergencies: when to evacuate (and when staying aboard is safer), leading students 100 feet off the road
  • Railroad crossing procedure and the special backing rules

Frequently asked

What do I need before the S endorsement?
A CDL of the right class for the bus (usually B), the P passenger endorsement, and then the school bus knowledge and skills tests. Most states add fingerprint background checks and periodic refresher training.
What is the most dangerous area around a school bus?
The 10 feet directly in front of the bus, where a child is hidden below the hood line. That is why crossover mirrors exist and why students cross far enough ahead to be seen.
When should students NOT be evacuated after an incident?
When the bus itself is the safest place — no fire risk, not on tracks, in a stable position. The bus body protects students better than the roadside in most crashes.
