Getting your CDL in Georgia
In Georgia, apply through the state licensing agency (GA DMV / DOT). The core steps are the same across states:
- Get a valid GA driver's license and provide required identity documents.
- Pass the DOT physical with a certified medical examiner and carry your medical card.
- Pass the written knowledge tests (general knowledge plus any endorsements you need).
- Hold your commercial learner's permit (CLP) for the required waiting period.
- Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a registered provider, if required.
- Pass the skills test — pre-trip inspection, basic controls, and road test.

What is different in Georgia
Licensing in Georgia runs through the Georgia Department of Driver Services. The part that catches people out is not the test — it is the medical certificate, because the way it reaches the state changed in 2025.
Georgia moved five days before the federal deadline. Since 18 June 2025 every medical certificate reaches DDS electronically from FMCSA via the National Registry, and DDS will not accept one by mail, fax, email, online, or in person at a Customer Service Center. To update or renew, get examined by an examiner on the National Registry and the certificate follows automatically.
Every submission channel is closed, not just some
DDS spelled out all five — mail, fax, email, online, in person — because drivers kept trying. If someone tells you to drop the card at a Customer Service Center, that advice predates 18 June 2025.
