VIN decoder

Paste any 17-character VIN. You get the build record straight from NHTSA, a check-digit verification that runs in your browser, and — the part other decoders skip — the weight rating that decides whether the truck needs a CDL.

Nothing is stored. The check digit is calculated on your device; the build record is looked up against the public NHTSA vPIC database.

Reading a VIN off the truck

Seventeen characters, and never the letters I, O or Q — they were left out of the alphabet so nobody confuses them with 1 and 0. If you are reading one off a plate and see what looks like an O, it is a zero.

The single most useful habit for a driver: photograph the driver-door jamb sticker, not just the windshield plate. The sticker carries the VIN and the GVWR and axle ratings — the numbers that decide the licence class, the scale you have to stop at, and whether the unit is inside your medical certificate's limits.

Common questions

Is a truck VIN different from a car VIN?

The format is identical — 17 characters, same check digit, same year code. What changes is how much of it is public: NHTSA holds full build records for light vehicles, while medium and heavy trucks often return only make, model, GVWR class and engine. That is a limit of the database, not of the VIN.

Where is the VIN on a semi truck?

Most commonly on a plate at the base of the driver-side windshield, on the driver-door jamb sticker, and stamped into the frame rail on the driver side ahead of the rear axle. The door sticker is the one worth photographing: it also carries the GVWR and axle ratings you need for the CDL question.

Can a VIN tell me if I need a CDL?

Indirectly, and only through weight. The VIN itself carries no weight rating, but NHTSA maps most VINs to a GVWR class. Class 7 and 8 (26,001 lb and up) put a single vehicle over the CDL line. The other two triggers — 16 or more passengers, and placarded hazmat — depend on how the vehicle is used, and no decoder can see that.

Why does my VIN come back with the wrong year?

Position 10 repeats every 30 years, so a code like "C" means 1982 or 2012. The tiebreaker written into the rule only applies to vehicles under 10,000 lb GVWR — which excludes most commercial trucks. When NHTSA has the record it resolves the year for you; when it does not, both years are genuinely possible.

What does an invalid check digit mean?

Position 9 is calculated from the other 16 characters. If it does not match, the VIN was mistyped, misread off a worn plate, or it is not a real VIN. It is the fastest paperwork check there is — run it before you sign anything.
