What the permit test actually is

There is no separate "permit exam". The CLP is issued when you pass the general knowledge test — the one above — together with whichever additional knowledge tests your vehicle needs. The permit then lets you drive a commercial vehicle with a CDL holder beside you while you prepare for the skills test.

After you pass

The permit has to be held at least 14 days before the skills test — a federal minimum that some states extend. That window is when Entry-Level Driver Training and the pre-trip inspection happen.
