What Virginia asks for on top of the test
The federal part is short: hold a CDL of the right class for the bus, hold the P endorsement, then pass the school bus knowledge test and a skills test in a school bus. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles handles all of that.
Then the state and the district layer their own requirements — fingerprint background checks, physical performance tests, refresher training on a schedule. Expect more paperwork than any other endorsement, and expect the district hiring you to have its own list on top of the DMV's.
