Ohio Pre-trip inspection practice test

The vehicle inspection is the first scored section of the Ohio CDL skills test, and the air brake sequence inside it is the part that fails candidates. These questions cover the figures and the order an examiner expects to hear.

OH Pre-Trip Inspection Question 1 of 10

When you inspect the battery, it should be:

How the inspection is scored in Ohio

You walk the vehicle with the BMV examiner beside you, point to or touch each component, name it, and say what you are checking for. Items you inspect silently score nothing — the test measures what you demonstrate, not what you notice.

The vehicle you bring sets your licence. No air brakes on it and Ohio prints an air brake restriction; a straight truck instead of a combination and there is no Class A at the end of it. Test in the vehicle you actually intend to drive.

Fees, scheduling and document requirements are set by Ohio. Confirm the current details with the BMV before you go.

What the pre-trip inspection test covers

The questions come from the federal CDL manual, so the material is the same in Ohio as it is anywhere else. The full breakdown — what each section asks and the figures worth memorising — is on the pre-trip inspection practice test guide. Everything on this page is the OH half of it.

Before any endorsement there is the written test everyone takes. The Ohio general knowledge practice test covers it, and the Ohio DOT physical page covers the medical certificate you cannot be licensed without.

Frequently asked

Is the Ohio pre-trip inspection a written test?
No — it is the hands-on first section of the skills test. But the facts it scores, like tread depths, leak rates and warning pressures, are the same ones the written tests ask, which is why practising them as questions works.
What fails people most often on the Ohio pre-trip?
The air brake check. In most states a failed air brake sequence fails the whole inspection regardless of the rest, so drill the order until it is automatic before you book with the BMV.
