Georgia Combination vehicles practice test

Every Class A applicant in Georgia takes the combination vehicles test on top of general knowledge. It covers what makes a tractor-trailer different from a straight truck: coupling and uncoupling, the trailer air system, and why combinations jackknife and roll.

Class A knowledge testing in Georgia

For a Class A commercial learner's permit the Georgia Department of Driver Services asks for general knowledge, air brakes and combination vehicles — usually on the same visit. Class B and Class C applicants skip this one entirely.

After the permit is issued there is a waiting period before the skills test, and Georgia sets its own length for it. Confirm the current hold time with the DDS rather than planning around a number you read somewhere; it is the part of the timeline most likely to have moved.

Fees, scheduling and document requirements are set by Georgia. Confirm the current details with the DDS before you go.

What the combination vehicles test covers

The questions come from the federal CDL manual, so the material is the same in Georgia as it is anywhere else. The full breakdown — what each section asks and the figures worth memorising — is on the combination vehicles practice test guide. Everything on this page is the GA half of it.

Before any endorsement there is the written test everyone takes. The Georgia general knowledge practice test covers it, and the Georgia DOT physical page covers the medical certificate you cannot be licensed without.

Frequently asked

Who takes the combination vehicles test in Georgia?
Anyone applying for a Class A CDL — the licence that covers tractor-trailers and any combination towing a unit over 10,000 lbs GVWR. Class B and C applicants in Georgia do not take it.
Is the Georgia combination test the same as doubles/triples?
No. Combination vehicles is the baseline Class A test for one trailer. Pulling two or three trailers additionally needs the T endorsement and its own knowledge test, which the DDS handles separately.
