Texas HazMat endorsement practice test
Hazmat questions come from Section 9 of the CDL manual, which is federal — the test Texas gives you is the one every other state gives. What is local is everything around it: TX issues the endorsement, and it cannot issue it until TSA clears you.
A non-bulk hazmat package must be marked with:
Getting the H endorsement in Texas
In Texas the hazmat endorsement is added to a CDL you already hold, or to one you are applying for, through the Texas Department of Public Safety. There is no skills test for hazmat — you pass the written test at the DPS and the H goes on the licence.
The step that catches people out is federal rather than local: a TSA security threat assessment, with fingerprints, its own application and its own fee, and processing that can run into weeks. Start it before you book the knowledge test, and start the re-check before the endorsement expires — Texas cannot renew an H without a current assessment.
Fees, scheduling and document requirements are set by Texas. Confirm the current details with the DPS before you go.
What the hazmat test covers
The questions come from the federal CDL manual, so the material is the same in Texas as it is anywhere else. The full breakdown — what each section asks and the figures worth memorising — is on the hazmat practice test guide. Everything on this page is the TX half of it.
Before any endorsement there is the written test everyone takes. The Texas general knowledge practice test covers it, and the Texas DOT physical page covers the medical certificate you cannot be licensed without.
Frequently asked
- Is the Texas hazmat test different from other states?
- No. The hazmat knowledge questions come from the federal CDL manual, so the material is the same in Texas as anywhere else. What varies is the fee and how the DPS schedules the test — confirm both with the agency before you go.
- Do I need the TSA background check in Texas?
- Yes. The security threat assessment is a federal requirement and applies in every state, Texas included. It is the long pole in the process, so book it first and let the knowledge test wait on it rather than the other way round.
